Understanding Septic Systems

If your home relies on a septic system for wastewater disposal, it is important to understand how your system works. With proper maintenance and pumping, you can aid your septic system in functioning properly for many years. By setting up regular services and septic pumping’s you are engaging in preventative maintenance. It is important to keep waste water flowing in easily and draining easily.  Here is a quick overview of some of the main components of a septic system.

Septic Tank
One of the primary parts of the septic system is the septic tank. Each time you flush the toilet or run water down the drain your wastewater flows through the septic pipe dumping into your septic tank. Your septic tank holds waste both solid and liquid. There are many microorganisms living and thriving in your septic tank who are doing big favors for your septic system. They are decomposing the waste solids. An abundance of solids can inhibit the in/out flow from your septic tank, solids can get into drainfield blocking it, or displace liquids too quickly into your drainfield and all of which can cause big problems.

Drainfield
Your drainfield is another crucial component of your septic system. The drainfield is designed to distribute liquid under the ground into the soil, which is overflowing from your septic tank. It is designed to do so without over saturating the ground causing a wet or flooded ground surface. As the wastewater seeps into the ground the soil acts like a filter.

Septic Pumping
It is important to have your septic pumped every 3-5 years. Although the microbes living in your tank do an amazing job they will need help keeping the level of solids down in the tank about every 3-5 years, so we help them out by pumping the tank. When you pump the tank inevitably you are also pumping out large colonies of the needed microbes. By pouring slightly spoiled milk down the drain you can help quickly restore the needed levels of microbes in your septic tank post pumping.
